August 20, 2018 This is our learning for next week! Reading: We will continue with our Launch Unit and focus on ways to think while reading. Students will also be introduced to partner reading, which is an essential component of the Daily Five program. We are setting the rules for independent work during Readers Workshop so that we can start guided reading groups by the following week. Your child has also started going to the media center. Writing: In writing the focus is on editing and revising and we will model the ways in which to do the same. Students will also learn to use a ‘seed’ idea and develop it into a full-fledged story as a precursor to narrative writing. Math: We will continue to work on place value this week. We will be using cubes to make groups of tens and hundreds. Students need to understand that a 100 is ten tens and also 100 ones. Guided math will focus on games that reinforce the same concept. Science: We will learn about the properties of the three states of matter and the changes in them. We are having a half day of rotations on Friday with 3 other classes to solidify our understanding of matter. In addition, in our classroom this week, we are going to do plenty of fun experiments to show how matter changes and how 2 states of matter can combine to form a third. We can’t wait to post those pictures on Class Dojo!! Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Perri for volunteering to be our room parent, and for sending in extra snacks for the kids who forget to bring the same. We appreciate her so much! Reminders: *Please have your child read for at least 20 minutes every day. *Please send a healthy snack every day. Lunch is only at noon and your kids are starving by then!

Hi parents,
We are off to a great start this year! Here's our learning for the week: Reading: We are learning how to become great readers in second grade! We have discussed taking care of our books and library, and how to pick ‘Just Right’ books. This week we will learn about the different types/genres of books and the characteristics of literary and informational texts. Our focus will also be on building reading stamina (the ability to do sustained reading without giving up). Also, a spelling pre-test given every Friday will determine the spelling words for your child for the following week. He/she will have their words written in their agendas every Monday to practice at home for a test on Friday. I am also sending the Spelling City login info for you to download at home. Writing: We are learning about how writing workshop works in our classroom. We will focus on narrative writing this quarter. This week we will learn that good personal narratives come from the heart. We write about things we know and love! Focus is on knowing what to do when a student thinks he/she is done! Science: We are beginning a new unit on Matter. We will be doing plenty of fun experiments to address all the standards! Math: We are working on place value this week. Students will need to know how to represent numbers in standard form (27), base ten blocks (pictures of tens and ones), word form (twenty seven), and expanded form (20+7). We will review all of these forms this week, and in guided math, there will be games to reinforce each of these skills. Reminders:
Here's our learning for the week:
Writing: We are switching gears this new quarter with poetry writing. It is one of my favorite genres to teach and I will be modeling the steps thoroughly to make poets of your little ones! I will be using the Lucy Calkins approach with help from other mentor texts. We will begin the unit by looking at everyday objects through a poet's eyes. Assign them a random object at home and see if they can tell you something about it from a poet's lens. I will be modeling using a pair of scissors tomorrow:) Reading: Students will deepen their understanding of text by identifying cause and effect (comprehension strategy) in pictures and text. I will be modeling the same in my mini-lessons and guided reading sessions. Great job on the spelling test...I will return the same tomorrow. In grammar, we will focus on comparatives by changing the spelling of root words using 'er' and 'est'. Social Studies: We will start researching President Jimmy Carter and also contrast his life with ours. We cannot wait to go to the Carter Center...please return the permission slips if you haven't already done so. I only need a couple more. Math: We will work on 2D and 3D shapes with plenty of hands-on activities using geo boards, folding paper, creating graphs/questions etc. to consolidate our understanding of the characteristics of shapes. Vocabulary here is crucial and I will emphasize quadrilaterals, polygons, hexagons, etc. Also, I am very proud of their understanding of two-step word problems. Our class average was 88%! * It was wonderful seeing many of you at the Taste of the Park. A huge thank you to Dasha's dad Mr. Jones for putting his heart and soul into the event, and for making it such a huge success. Thanks also to Alex's mom for the fun treats that she sent in on Friday for St. Patrick's Day. We appreciate the kind gesture! * Report cards will come home on Wednesday. Please sign/return the white card and keep the report card at home. * As we enter the 4th quarter, I would like to emphasize the importance of being present every day, and on time. I am noticing that when students are tardy, he/she finds it difficult to adjust to our routines, and also have problems with behavior. This and the fact that they miss out on all the academics that takes place in the mornings. Here’s our learning for the week!
Writing: We will wrap up opinion writing. Using the Pinky and Rex series, Ivy and Bean, and Roald Dahl books, I will over the course of the week model how to make comparisons to support opinions about our favorite books. Reading: We will continue to focus on the moral/lesson in fables. I will also work on how the characters in fairy tales respond to challenges in the story. Math: I will incorporate money in word problems and have an assessment mid-week. Thank you to all the parents that made it to Publix Math Night. It was a huge success!

Here's our learning for the week! Writing We are continuing opinion writing and I am so proud of the progress that your children have made in terms of the structure namely, reasons followed by examples. I am trying to make it more challenging by having them write to a prompt. We will be using books by Arthur Brown and Mo Willems. Reading In Readers Workshop, we will move on to fables and the moral or lesson that they teach. Your child will also continue to learn to compare and contrast fairy tales as that is an important standard for the third quarter. Math We will work on word problems involving money and 3-digit subtraction. Important reminders: * Publix Math Night on March 8th from 5-7 pm Hope to see some of you there. It promises to be a lot of fun! * I will be in an all day Curriculum and Instruction meeting on Wednesday...substitute teacher in the classroom! * Friday is Picture Day. Please fill out the form that went home last week if you would like your child's picture taken. Here’s our learning for the week:
Writing We are continuing our focus on persuasive writing with special emphasis on adding 'extras' to reinforce our opinions. I would also like your child to get their favorite book from the media center/home on Monday. Please have them read it at home, so that they can give reasons with evidence from their text as to why their book needs to win an award! As I am analyzing their writing, I am noticing a repetition of ideas for the introduction and am exposing them to some new ones. Talk to your child about starting with dialogue or using words like ‘wow’ and ‘imagine’. Reading We will try and do a Readers Theater with our fairytales, as speaking with expression and different voices is an important standard in second grade. Our students are also learning to compare and contrast fairy tales and fables. Science We will begin our unit on space. This week we will focus on stars. Ask your child if he/she enjoyed the star lab experience on Friday! Math We will continue with 3 digit subtraction. After the break, we will be working on solving word problems using money. Please have your child mentally add and subtract money at home. For example, they should be able to add a dollar, 3 quarters, 5 dimes, 2 nickels and some pennies and be able to tell you the total.
The 2nd and 3rd grade levels will perform, Thursday night February 1st, after the PTA meeting. The 2nd and 3rd grade students will go to their classrooms at 6:15pm. Parents will go to the cafeteria. The PTA meeting will start at 6:30pm and end around 6:50pm. The 2nd grade level will perform first followed by the 3rd grade level. We should be finished by 7:20pm. I hope to see you there!
Hi parents,
Below is a letter from administration regarding student drop off in the mornings. Please read the same so that you are aware of the changes. Sedalia Park Community, Our school’s mission is “Every Student. Every Day.” That statement applies to every aspect of our school, especially ensuring that our students are safe. At this time, there is a concern for student safety in the parking lot that faces our front door, located on Utica Dr. That parking lot is our bus parking lot only, and is not to be used for student drop off in the morning or pick up at dismissal. We do allow some of our students with disabilities to use this parking lot in the morning which is indicated with a colored card from Sedalia Park Administration. On any given morning, we have nearly twenty buses and day-care vans driving through this lot and dropping off students at the front door. Due to the high volume of bus and day care traffic, it is unsafe for students to walk through this parking lot. Despite our best efforts, students are consistently let out of cars and sent to the front door unattended. Due to this increasing safety concern, it is necessary to make some changes to our school procedures.
Here’s our learning for the week!
Writing We will be learning the nuances of opinion writing and the specific components namely the introduction, reasons, examples, and conclusion. I will review the rubric with them to help with the writing. Reading We will work on reading parts of a book to build comprehension, by completing different activities. Again, the idea is to integrate reading and social studies. Social Studies We are learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and what it was like in the United States when he lived compared to how it is now. However, all the learning will take place in inquiry stations such as a photography station and slogan station. This is one of my favorite areas to teach as it involves team work among students! I always look forward to the rich discussions that take place in the classroom. Math Our focus here will be on adding three or four 2-digit numbers. I will model the partial-sums strategy. Thanks! |
