Happy New year parents! I hope everyone had a great winter break! Report cards will be coming home on Friday. Please sign the white signature card on the 2nd 9 weeks slot and return it. You may keep the report card. Tomorrow, I will also be giving the reading and math pre-tests for this quarter.
Also, I will be sending home the Six Flags Read to Succeed Program letter and reading log tomorrow. Feb. 27th is the deadline to return the forms to me. This is an easy way for your child to earn a free ticket to Six Flags! Here’s our learning for the next 2 weeks: Writing We are beginning a new unit on opinion writing. This is a very structured type of writing. We are looking for students to introduce a topic, state their opinion, give 3 reasons to support their opinion, and provide a conclusion. I will be using several mentor texts to model the same, starting with some basic letter writing techniques. Reading Our focus is on summarizing as a strategy to aid with reading comprehension. I will use texts from our Benchmark program and other mentor texts to model the same. Social Studies We will be learning about Martin Luther King and Jackie Robinson and what it was like in the United States when they lived compared to how it is now. I will integrate this with reading and students will get an opportunity to work in stations. Math This week I will be reviewing 2-digit addition and subtraction strategies before moving on to 3-digit ones next week. Can’t wait to see my kiddos... Here’s our learning for the week!
Writing/Science: We are going to continue with scientific writing and STEM projects. This week’s challenge is to create a catapult using craft sticks, plastic spoons, and pompoms. I was truly amazed at the creativity and engagement that your children showed last week in creating vehicles to transport rocks. I will send it home tomorrow so you can appreciate the same! Reading: We will continue to focus on ‘summarizing’ and synthesizing’ as skills to help in comprehension. I will be modeling the same using texts from ‘Benchmark’ our reading program. Math: We will continue with measurement. Students are pretty adept at measuring using centimeters and inches. We will be doing a fun activity of measuring a gummy worm, stretching it out and then measuring the difference. Naturally, we will end by eating it! Thanks and stay warm! Here's our learning for the week:
Writing/Science: We will be integrating writing and science as the students work on scientific writing by doing a STEM project. The goal with the latter is to build something that will help carry 5 rocks by either pushing or pulling. This aligns with our science standards of forces and motion. Thank you in advance for sending the materials for the same. Our focus in writing will be to use the data from the experiment and writing it out as lab reports. Reading: I will again be integrating science and reading by using non fiction passages on motion, gravity, pushes and pulls to check for comprehension in reading. Our focus on poems last week was very interesting as the kids learned the importance of rhymes, rhythm and repetition in poems. The poems that they created were delightful! I will again revisit poems at a later date. Math: We have started the unit on measurement and did many hand-on activities, the first being creating rulers using inch cubes and centimeter cubes. Our standard not only focuses on measuring using centimeters, inches, yardsticks and meter sticks, but also measuring 2 objects of different lengths. I am hoping that the students will understand that a ruler is similar to an open number line in which case, it becomes easy to measure and compare different lengths. If possible, please have them practice at home by not only having the object placed at zero, but different starting points. Here's our learning for the week:
Reading We will continue to focus on non-fiction text features and finding evidence that supports reasons in readers’ workshop. In phonics, the focus is on possessives and the use of apostrophes. Starting this month, I’ll be sending a monthly activities double-sided sheet home that has writing activities on one side and other skills on the back. This is totally an optional activity to be completed at home! Please do not send it back to school. For the November Writing Calendar, feel free to use the calendar as ideas to have your child write a little bit over the Thanksgiving break, if you would like them to! Writing We are working on a scientific lab report to be completed over the course of 2 weeks. It will include a STEM experiment to see if a race car will go farther on the rug or the bare floor. We are working on the scientific question, hypothesis, materials, etc. this week, and will conduct the actual experiment and collect data next week. Math I have introduced 2-digit subtraction with regrouping and will continue the same this week in guided math groups. I’ll also revisit the concept of addition with regrouping for some of the students that are struggling a little with it. Social Studies We are continuing to learn about Native American heroes. Our focus this week is Mary Musgrove. Students are learning to answer questions about the historical figures by reading a chapter a day. A huge 'thank you' to Mrs. Bell for chaperoning the Chattahoochee field trip and for baking delectable cookies for the entire class!
Parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join us for our annual Thanksgiving lunch on Thursday, November 16th from 12:20 to 1:05. The cost of a guest lunch is $3.75. Classes will eat in the cafeteria on the day assigned above. On the day your child's class is not listed, they will have sack lunches and eat in their classroom. Please join us for a delicious lunch!!
