Hi parents,
Looking forward to meeting all of you next week! Please remember that it is early dismissal for the students all week at 12:30. Please write any changes in dismissal in their agendas so as to avoid any confusion. * Fabulous job Marquin on being the first one to present the pumpkin project - your description of Harry Potter was amazing! * Thank you Dasha for sharing your writing/chapter book that you are working on at home. The class enjoyed listening about your fictional character. Keep up the good work! * Also, a huge 'Thank you' to Mr. Jones, our wonderful room parent for coordinating the class basket for the Fall Festival. Your time and effort is sincerely appreciated! I am excited for the new quarter and hope you are too! I have graded all the assessments for the first nine weeks, and will share them with you during conference week. Thank you to all the parents that have already confirmed their times with me. I am eagerly looking forward to meeting all of you and discussing your child’s progress.
Here’s our learning for the week: Reading: This week, we will focus on Sequence of Events (comprehension strategy). To teach this, I will use Determining Text Importance (metacognitive strategy). In other words, I will help your child in understanding the importance of text so that they can retell the sequence of events/steps in informational texts to comprehend better. In phonics, the focus in on contractions. Writing: Our focus shifts to informational writing and we will start with a simple ‘how to’ this week and move on to more complex scientific writing including lab reports. Tomorrow, we are going to make ‘Pie in a cup’ and write the steps involved in making it. And what fun is learning without food right?!! So, we will eat the pie after completing our writing. Don’t forget to ask your child the steps involved in making it! For the rest of the week, we will add transition words and details using a rubric. Hopefully by Friday, we will have a final draft of our ‘How to’ piece. Social Studies: The focus is on the Creeks and the Cherokees and the manner in which we are similar and different. Math: We are moving on to addition of 2 digit numbers and I will model various strategies that the students can use to add with accuracy and speed.
Here's the learning for this week!
Writing: We will focus on the difference between editing and revising this week. Your child will apply the same skills in their writing as they realize that revising is a more complex and difficult process. We'll move to informational writing next week. Reading: The focus is on plot in fiction by understanding the summary (beginning, middle, and end) of stories. Ask your child to retell the story (summary) for a quick comprehension check at home! Social Studies: We are wrapping up our unit on the role of the mayor, governor, and president. Math: We are finishing off this quarter with bar graphs and pictographs to help in analyzing data. In number talks, we will continue to focus on word problems. * IXL winners for the week: Dasha, Elijah, Alex, Lorenz, and Summer...Keep up the good work! * Chattahoochee Field trip on October 31st: I will only need one parent chaperone; the first one to respond goes!! * Book character project: I have a small, interesting project for your children. It involves getting a small pumpkin and decorating it to reflect his/her favorite book character. I will send a sheet that explains the details either tomorrow/Tuesday. Please use the supplies that you have at home to decorate. Pumpkins are available for $2/3 at most stores. Please let me know it it is difficult to get one, and I will send one with your child. Students will have a couple of weeks to complete the same. Please feel free to send it to class as and when they finish. I will discuss the same with your kiddos tomorrow. Can't wait to see them...I really did miss them! |
