August 20, 2018 This is our learning for next week! Reading: We will continue with our Launch Unit and focus on ways to think while reading. Students will also be introduced to partner reading, which is an essential component of the Daily Five program. We are setting the rules for independent work during Readers Workshop so that we can start guided reading groups by the following week. Your child has also started going to the media center. Writing: In writing the focus is on editing and revising and we will model the ways in which to do the same. Students will also learn to use a ‘seed’ idea and develop it into a full-fledged story as a precursor to narrative writing. Math: We will continue to work on place value this week. We will be using cubes to make groups of tens and hundreds. Students need to understand that a 100 is ten tens and also 100 ones. Guided math will focus on games that reinforce the same concept. Science: We will learn about the properties of the three states of matter and the changes in them. We are having a half day of rotations on Friday with 3 other classes to solidify our understanding of matter. In addition, in our classroom this week, we are going to do plenty of fun experiments to show how matter changes and how 2 states of matter can combine to form a third. We can’t wait to post those pictures on Class Dojo!! Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Perri for volunteering to be our room parent, and for sending in extra snacks for the kids who forget to bring the same. We appreciate her so much! Reminders: *Please have your child read for at least 20 minutes every day. *Please send a healthy snack every day. Lunch is only at noon and your kids are starving by then!

Hi parents,
We are off to a great start this year! Here's our learning for the week: Reading: We are learning how to become great readers in second grade! We have discussed taking care of our books and library, and how to pick ‘Just Right’ books. This week we will learn about the different types/genres of books and the characteristics of literary and informational texts. Our focus will also be on building reading stamina (the ability to do sustained reading without giving up). Also, a spelling pre-test given every Friday will determine the spelling words for your child for the following week. He/she will have their words written in their agendas every Monday to practice at home for a test on Friday. I am also sending the Spelling City login info for you to download at home. Writing: We are learning about how writing workshop works in our classroom. We will focus on narrative writing this quarter. This week we will learn that good personal narratives come from the heart. We write about things we know and love! Focus is on knowing what to do when a student thinks he/she is done! Science: We are beginning a new unit on Matter. We will be doing plenty of fun experiments to address all the standards! Math: We are working on place value this week. Students will need to know how to represent numbers in standard form (27), base ten blocks (pictures of tens and ones), word form (twenty seven), and expanded form (20+7). We will review all of these forms this week, and in guided math, there will be games to reinforce each of these skills. Reminders:
